Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Amos Allan Mertz (P4a4e)
Amos Allan Mertz is listed as the youngest son of George Peter and Amelia Amanda by all historical sources. In the 1870 Census, he was named Albert age 6 -- which name I think is simply a mistake of someone trying to remember all those names of the children when the Census taker showed up. Indeed, in 1880, he was Amos A age 15. He is designated P4a4e.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Amos Allan Mertz (P4a4e)
Amos was the only one of George Peter’s sons who left the Northumberland area, first to Iowa, then Williamsport and then to Florida.
I cannot find Amos and Tillie (even using the names Allan, Matilda and/or Albert) in the 1900 Census. They did show up in the 1910 Census living in Williamsport where he was a merchant. His son Raymond, married apparently to Grace, lived with his parents as did their son Alan R.
Then in 1930, Amos was retired, living in Miami, FL and Raymond, still living with his parents, was the proprietor and manager of a dance hall. There is no sign of Grace. However, back in Williamsport, we find Grace M Mertz age 34 married at 20 a seamstress. Neither Raymond nor Grace are said to be either widowed or divorced, instead both were reported as married, but they do not appear to have been living together.
An article in the Public Press of 17 Nov 1893 says Amos Mertz married a few months back a young woman from Selinsgrove and they have moved to Iowa.
Parent-Proof notes for Matilda Isabella (Spouse 1)
His wife was said by all sources to be Tillie Vanada. I am sure she was Matilda and her parents' name is consistently spelled Vonneida or Von Neida in both the 1870 and 1880 Census.
An article in the Mddleburgh Post dated 16 Jan 1902 says Tillie Mertz (nee Von Neida) of Williamsport came to visit her parents and got very sick but is recovering.
Another article in that paper, dated 25 Oct 1894, said Tillie was visiting her parents from her home in Burlington, Iowa.
