Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for William Henry Mertz (P4a4b)
Floyd lists him as a son of George Peter, as does Jack Mertz and Census. Floyd says he was a florist of note.
I have been in contact with Pat Mertz Esswein, my third cousin, who has helped me document the William Henry branch of the family and takes issue with any characterization of William Henry based on his nickname "Hoggy". Pat is the daughter of Herbert Altmann Mertz who was the son of Boyd Fisher Mertz and Maria Altmann -- a German woman he met there after World War I. Boyd Fisher was the son of William Henry.
I have also heard from third cousin Dan Mertz (George Peter, George Peter, William Henry) who described the business activity of William Henry’s family: “I'd characterize it as an integrated grower, processor, and distributor of food and related products. I still marvel at its complexity! My grandfather George and his brothers Bill, Harold, and Boyd farmed the Susquehanna River bottom from Point Township to and beyond Chillisquaque Creek. I'm not sure when the greenhouses were built. Their business was production of fruits, vegetables, (flowers?) and fresh meats which they sold in the Sunbury Markethouse. The brothers also trucked and sold their goods, personally, in Philadelphia, Baltimore & Reading (back to Berks County). For a short period of time, they had farms in Florida. As the story goes, they would truck coal into the south and bring back produce they grew on the farms down there."
This is the branch of the family that Dad always called the "Greenhouse Mertzes". He would say: “we’re not related to them.” Evidently, second cousins didn’t count to Dad. William Henry is designated P4a4b.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for William Henry Mertz (P4a4b)
William Henry is on find-a-grave.
I found his obituary in the Public Press newspaper dated 24 Dec 1915. Some excerpts:
He was born in the old Mertz homestead along the West Branch and spent all his life there with the exception of three years spent on the old Frederick farm and the past several years spent at what wa formerly the McWilliams place. Mr Mertz and family vacated the old homestead when it had to be taken away for the new railroad yard.
One of a family of thirteen, five of whom are now dead. Surviving are: Mrs George Long, Miss Ida Mertz of Williamsport, Abner and John P, Amos and Mrs Charles Biehl of Williamsport and Mrs Harry Jacoby and Mrs Benner of Oil City.
In 1878 married Miss Emaline Moyer of Freeburg. Nine children: Mrs. Harold V Lesher of Point, Mrs E B Bergen of Harlingen, NJ, Mrs J V D Bergen of Belle Mead, NJ, Miss Mabel and Miss Ruth, George, William, Boyd and Harold.
Casket bearers were six nephews: Edward, Lee, Oakley, George, Jeff and Carl
