Obituary.
Robert Wayne Mertz, born at Geisinger on Nov. 9, 1935, son of Charles Elmer Mertz and Mary Park Mertz of Watsontown, passed away Sept. 4, 2021, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland.
Robert graduated from Watsontown High School in 1953. He joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Maine and married Betty Jayne DeLong Mertz, December 1955. After returning home from military service, Robert worked for several trucking companies, most notable Keplar Brothers, where he hauled steel out of Milton Steel Mill. He was then employed by Branch Motor Express for nearly 15 years. After deregulation, Robert owned his own trucks, hauling for various industries. When he finished full time driving, he spent approximately 10 years as a part time instructor for Professional Drivers Academy in Milton.
Robert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Jane DeLong Mertz, his three sons and their wives: Steve and Kathy of Dauphin, Scott and Brooke of Danville, and Bradd and Karen of Danville. He is also survived by a grandson, Alan Mertz of Dauphin, and extended family of bonus grandchildren and bonus great-grandchildren.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Ned Mertz, Raymond Mertz, and Jay C. Mertz, and half sister Evelyn Parks.
