My Comments notes for Anthony Herring
Anthony Herring was born about 1648 and died about 1715. Sometime after his father died, he acquired 200 acres in Isle of Wight County and continued the family business of tobacco farming. What is known about Anthony’s life comes from deeds between him and other people and then later deeds that associate him with certain presumed sons and those sons with their brothers. He did not leave a will, but the departure of several of his presumed sons to Chowan Precinct, NC in about 1715 suggest that date as when Anthony died.
The 200 acres he farmed was acquired in 1694 in a deed from William West Sr. and wife Reborrah. This fact fuels the speculation that Anthony’s wife was a West and somewhere other then the Herring book I saw her name given as Rebecca so I have included these Wests as Herring ancestors though I do not have as much certainty about them as most of the rest of the names in this chapter.
Anthony did not leave a will. So what has been pieced together about his sons, specifically that the John Herring discussed below was the son of Anthony, has been pieced together through land deeds and assumptions made as implied relationships.
Research notes for Rebecca (Spouse 1)
Croom provides the name and date of marriage. Rebecca was supposedly the daughter of Wililam West and wife Reborrah.
