Parent-Proof notes for 2G GF Christopher Slade
His death certificate says he was the son of Christopher Slade and Delilah Creighton.
Census History notes for 2G GF Christopher Slade
He is with his father in 1830, his mother in 1840 and his brother in 1850.
1850. Asbury Slade lives in District 2 BAL Co age 33 and also present is Christopher 25, Ann 18, John 15 and Francis Carlin 17. A neighbor is Benjamin Slade 28, wife Sarah 27 and son Mahlon 1. Their grandmother Ann is on the next page.
In 1860-1900, Christopher is head of household.
The 1870 and 1880 Censuses lock this family together. In 1870, Christopher Slade lives in 7th District Wiseburg. He is 45 and lives with Elizabeth 36 and Lydia 5. Young Clarence Hoshall is 2 houses away.
In 1880, they are all about 10 years older.
Research notes for 2G GF Christopher Slade
Becky Curry has the Slade line from Lida back to William (the younger who died in 1731). The one thing she had wrong was she thought Lida Slade married Clarence E Hoshall, there was such a man, but Lida’s husband in fact was Clarence M Hoshall.
Harold Slade has the line from Lida only back to Ezekiel. He had several mistakes including that
Christopher Slades’ father-in-law William Carlin was the stowaway and he says that Ezekiae’s wife was Blanche Wyn (which may be right, but we think possibly his second wife and not our ancestor.)
The Hightower/Rockefeller Internet tree has the line from Lida back to both William’s. The new information in this family tree is all the places he names for where people were born or died. I think it is based on Census places and wills as to where they were living at the time.
My Comments notes for 2G GF Christopher Slade
The biography of Christopher Slade is given in “Genealogical and Biographical Record of Baltimore City and County” published in 1897. It says he was born on the old family homestead where he continues to reside. It names his parents and says his great-grandfather Ezekial was a native of England and emigrated during colonial days becoming a large land-owner in Maryland. Christopher’s grandfather Abraham was also a large land-owner. Three of Abraham’s sons: Christopher (sergeant), John and Abraham served in the War of 1812.
It goes on to say that Christopher married Maria E Carlin -- a native of Baltimore County “where her ancestors have made their home since Revolutionary times.” She is a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church. In 1879, Christopher was elected to the Maryland Legislature and served a two year term.
There are two interesting items in this article worthy of further comment.
• I don’t believe Ezekial was a native of England, his grandfather was. But this is yet one more source suggesting the alternate scenario.
• It is true that most of Maria Carlin’s ancestors were in America well before the Revolutionary War -- but specifically her Grandfather William Carlin may have been an immigrant probably in the years just following the war.
A newspaper article found by Becky Curry dated June 16, 1905 says "the children and grandchildren of Christopher Slade gave him a surprise birthday party Monday evening and presented him with a gold headed cane. It was the 80th birthday of Mr. Slade, who is one of the best known men in Baltimore County and has been a very successful farmer and despite his age, is very energetic and looks after his business affairs, as he did years ago. He was for several years a member of the legislature and he has always taken quite an interest in politics."
This party was also mentioned in the diaries of Lida Slade Hoshall.
Children Names notes for 2G GF Christopher Slade
Christopher wrote his will 22 Dec 1898, his wife having died earlier that year. He referred to ten children, six grandchildren and family servant Linda Wilson. The ten children are listed below. At the time he wrote his will, two of his daughters had died and had left issue. Christopher therefore made monetary bequests to Elizabeth and Laura Ayres, daughters of Zippora, deceased and to Lida S Hoshall. The other grandchildren he named were three sons of his daughter Mary Hunter who had since remarried and was then Mary Wise. He mentioned two pieces of property: Widows Prospect and Gemmill Lot.
Christopher then made a codicil in 1900 because son Carroll had recently died. And he made a second codicil in 1906 changing several of the terms of his initial will as it related to his sons Christopher C and J Leonard.
On 11 May 1907, an agreement was reached between the surviving children of Christopher Slade “distributing the estate of said deceased in a manner somewhat different than that designated in said will” (referring to the will of Christopher Slade, proved 24 Jul 1906). The result was that William Slade (and wife Ida), Christopher C Slade (and wife Annie), Asbury Slade (and wife Bettie), Mary Wise (and husband Charles H), Bettie Wiley (and husband Richard K) and John R Slade (and wife Lida S) deeded to Josiah L Slade about 234 acres of land lying partly in Baltimore and partly in Harford County.
This agreement did not affect the cash distributions Christopher had specified to his grand-children, it had only to do with the land which in any event was only to go to one or another of his surviving children.

The Baltimore County Democrat, March 12, 1898. “Letters of Administration have been granted to Christopher Slade on the estate of Elizabeth M Slade.”
Her death notice was published in the same newspaper.
My Comments notes for Maria Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
Maria Elizabeth Carlin, 1835-1898, was the wife of Christopher Slade. She lived her entire life in or near Baltimore County. The Carlin line appears to trace back to William Sentee of French origin who was adopted by James Carlin.
