Parent-Proof notes for 8G/9G GF Samuel Collett
Samuel was said to be his eldest son in the will of John Collett. J D Collett says Samuel was born in 1640 and died in 1706. He gives no source for either date. His sister Mary married George Goldsmith which explains why the 1666 will of George Goldsmith refers to wife Mary and his brother-in-law Samuel Collett.
My Comments notes for 8G/9G GF Samuel Collett
J D Collett says Samuel married in 1672 but does not know the name of his wife and only one child, David, is known. Samuel’s name appeared in two land transactions which may or may not give clues to his wife's family, name unknown. One was a power of attorney from Thomas Powell in 1667 and the other a land deed to John Tarkenton in 1671.
Because of discrepancies elsewhere in the work of J D Collett, I need to comment that I do know for a fact that Samuel existed and that he was the son of John, but I’m not sure where J D got the dates of Samuel’s life. I have no evidence of his 1640 birth, though it is about right. He clearly was one of the people transported in 1653. He was already legally an adult when John wrote his will in 1669 -- thus born before 1648. So my guess would be 1645 or a little earlier.
I also do not know when he died other than to take J D’s word for it. I have not seen any indication of a will or estate administration for him which actually seems a little unusual. Nor was there any property later sold by his heirs which also seems strange since the Colletts started out with a large amount of land.
