I ordered his death certificate from the Maryland State Archives. It confirms his date of birth and date of death as stated on his tombstone and it clearly says his parents were William Carlin and Sarah Poteet. The informant was Josiah’s daughter Laura F Ward.

I ordered this because I had realized Sarah was about 26 when she married William and even though I had the citation of her marriage, I worried that perhaps she had been the widow Poteet when she married William Carlin. I wanted to rule that out and I think Josiah’s death certificate does exactly that.

Her given name was Charity Asenath per her tombstone and her maiden name was Lytle per some Ancestry family tree.
