Edward Charles Gavin ran against Gabriel Holmes for the North Carolina Senate and the story goes that they campaigned together, driving around in the same buggy. At campaign stops, each man spoke in favor of the candidacy of the other and the outcome was that Gavin was elected. But in those days the General Assembly elected the Governor and Gavin then campaigned on behalf of Holmes for Governor and he was elected to that position.
