Parent-Proof notes for Rebecca (Spouse 1)
TWO REBECCA MERTZ BORN 1800-1820 IN (future) SNYDER COUNTY

Rebecca Tittle
One of them married Henry Tittle and is buried with him.

Her tombstone is pretty readable and says she was born 30 Dec 1805, died 28 Dec 1858 and was 52y, 11m, 29 — and the arithmetic is consistent.

“Snyder County Annals” cited the marriage found in the New Berlin Union Star of Rebecca Mertz to Henry Hittle, both of Beaver Township and gave the date 22 May 1840 (which may have been the newspaper date).

I have also seen the Wagenseller listing of marriages that says Henry Hittle & Rebecca Mertz 3 May 1840.

She only made one Census: 1850. Henry Tittle lives in Beaver Twp, Union Co with wife Rebecka 43 and Alexander 10, John 8, Amelia 6 and Samuel 5. [1807 birth implied]

She certainly was a Mertz, it says so on her tombstone.

Rebecca Schnee
The other married Jacob Schnee and per Wagenseller the date was 2 Apr 1846 and she was of Washington Township. She is buried with Jacob.

Her memorial says she died 30 Jan 1886 and was 77y, 8m, 18d which computes to 12 May 1808.

In 1850, she was 31, in 1860 39, in 1870 51 and in 1880 61. This is consistently (ignoring 1860) suggesting an 1819 or so birth. Which caused me to go back and look at her tombstone and I can convince myself she died in 1896 at age 77 so born in 1818.

She had only two children: Emma Viola and Albert. Both of their death certificates give her name as Mertz and when son Albert married a second time in 1919, he said his mother was Rebecca Mertz born in Washington Township.

Who’s Her Daddy?
Peter Mertz (P4a), of Freeburg, had a daughter named Rebecca, we know that from his will. He named his six daughters in his will but gave no married names (and yes I am pretty sure some were already married). Rebecca was listed last of the six daughters, I think it was birth order.

I don’t know exact birth dates for any of Peter’s daughters but I think from their ages in Census the others were 1797 to possibly 1807. I do have birth dates for his sons and they range from 1806 to 1821.

Joseph A Meiser says Peter had a daughter Rebecca and she married Mr. Schnee.

My view is that Peter’s daughter Rebecca was indeed Rebecca Schnee. Rebecca Schnee was of Washington Township where Peter lived and Rebecca Tittle was of Beaver Township. (Yes she was 35 when she married so maybe was living away from home.) But here’s the other rub:

If Rebecca Tittle’s tombstone is right, it almost rules out her being Peter’s daughter since he had a son Philip who was born one week later.

So who was Rebecca Tittle’s father?

One clue is her Beaver Township location in 1840. There was but one Mertz living in that specific location in the 1840 Census, George Mertz, who I believe was Samuel’s son. Census also supports the idea that Samuel had as may as four daughters, two born before 1810. Catherine was born possibly in 1811 and Sophia much later. Mary was born about 1810, so Rebecca, born 1805, fits in quite nicely.
