David can be tracked in Census but it is his occupation and names of family members that prove it is always him. In 1860, he lived with his brother, William Jackson, in Carroll County, IL. He was N D Mertz in 1870 in Beaver Township, Snyder County with wife Rebecca and a daughter whose initial was A and a son whose initial was C. In 1880, the family was in Elkhart, IN. He was now David, Rebecca was Rebecca and A was Annie and C was Calvin. Then that whole family is found in 1900 in Illinois when he was again N D.
