Research notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
There are at least four women named Elizabeth Mertz living in Longswamp Township by about 1765. Nicholas had a daughter Elizabeth who married Lawrence Schollenberger before about 1763. He also had a daughter Maria Elizabeth who later married Nicholas Klein. I believe Peter also had a daughter named Elizabeth because of the great number of times that Elizabeth stands as sponsor at the baptisms of Peter’s grandchildren. I believe she married Conrad Drescher.
That brings us to John Jacob’s daughter Elizabeth born in 1762. I believe she married Peter Fegely. It is possible, though, that I have not totally figured things out relating to all these women named Elizabeth.
My Comments notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
Justin Houser has tackled the too many Elizabeth problem after seeing the dilemna I posed.
Here is part of his analysis relating to Peter Fegely:
Finally, we get to Peter Vogeli/Fegely. He was a brother of Henry who married Barbara Mertz.
In the 1790 census of Longswamp Twp, Berks Co, PA he is listed as Peter Fegely with 3 males under 16, 1 male over 16, 3 females.
In the 1800 census of Macungie Twp, Northampton Co, PA he is listed as Peter Fegely with 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 26-45.
He is listed in the 1800 septennial census of Macungie Twp as Peter Fegely.
I can't seem to find him after that. There is a will for a Peter Fegely in 1845 but online genealogies show him as someone else. Our guy would be getting a bit too old by then anyway.
The 1800 census suggests that Elizabeth was born between 1755 and 1774. Peter was born by 1757 because of the tax records. I'd put him at ca. 1757 and her at perhaps ca. 1760.
You show children for Peter and Elizabeth as Anna Maria 1782, Elizabeth 1784, Christian 1787, David 1804, and Reuben 1806. I think David and Reuben belong to the younger Peter (the one with the 1845 will) because it fits better and his wife was also named Elizabeth. So that leaves Anna Maria, Elizabeth, and Christian in our Peter Fegely and Elizabeth Mertz family.
The large number of children in the house in the census which doesn't seem to match up with the church records suggests to me that indeed some of Heinrich and Barbara's family may have stayed with them for a time. But the connection would be through Henry and Peter being brothers, not through Elizabeth and Barbara being sisters.
