Parent-Proof notes for Francis Potee
Bobbi Potee Gress has done more work on the Balitmore Potee family than anyone. Here is what she wrote about Francis:
“Elizabeth Spencer and Francis Petit (Potee) were married on 17 Jul 1803. This is stated in documents re Elizabeth's applying for his pension (land bounty) based on service in the War of 1812. In the document it says Francis died on 17 Feb 1832 and they had several children (not named). I believe this Francis Potee is the son of Peter Potee (b 1755) and Elizabeth Anne Sutton.
Peter P, Julia H, and Laura P are listed together in the 1850 census. Elizabeth Potee is listed in the 1850 census with Elijah and Sarah Medcalf (Metcalf or Medcalf) and children. One of the sons of Elijah and Sarah was Francis Metcalf/Medcalf. I believe Sarah is the daughter of Francis Potee and Elizabeth Spencer. Elijah and Sarah are found in Quaker meeting minutes.
Elizabeth Potee was received in a Quaker meeting about 1850. There are Spencers in the meeting minutes throughout Elizabeth's life. I suspect she was born a Quaker but may not have attended meetings until after her husband's death.
Francis Metcalf/Medcalf married Isabelle "Belle" Owings. Isabelle died before 1918 (her husband's obit in 1918 says "late" wife.} Isabelle is buried in Friends Burial Ground in Baltimore in G47. Peter P Potee is buried in G46 and Julia H Potee is buried in G45.
Thus, I believe Peter P, Julia H, and Laura P and Sarah were siblings. I don't know what happened to Laura P (maybe died or married) -- she disappears after 1850 census.”
Bobbi had long been troubled by why Peter P and Julia were buried in the Friends Cemetery when we were assuming they were the children of Peter and Mary (Young) Potee and thi seems a batter theory on who they are. The problem is we’re left then with the “fact” that Peter had eleven children when he died and we can name very few of them.
Discrepant Facts notes for Francis Potee
Somewhere I found record of the marriage 13 Feb 1840, Francis Potee to Miss Maria Godfrey. But which Francis? This one died apparently in 1832, so not him.
My Comments notes for Francis Potee
It would be nice to know when Francis was born. The only clue is that he was age 26-45 in the 1810 Census, older than Peter who was 16-25. And he was age 50-60 in 1830. That implies he was born in the 1770’s. Some Internet trees say he was born in 1777. The reason I would like to know is so I can pin down whether he was Isaac’s father. I don’t know when Isaac was born either but sometime in the late 1790’s would be about right.
