Parent-Proof notes for Hannah Rowe
We first learned of the Rowe family from the name Joseph Rowe Webster, father of Hollis Webster. I learned his mother's name, Hannah, from the 1860 Census. J R Webster's father, I now know his name was Moses, had died and J R lived with his mother and I was pretty sure she was the Hannah living with an older man, Joseph Rowe, a lawyer in Milton, MA, in 1850. I surmised Joseph was Hannah's father.
I was wrong. Close but wrong. Joseph was Hannah's uncle, brother of Hannah's father John, who died in 1812.
John Rowe was born in Quebec, the son of Jacob Rowe. I don't know what happened to Jacob, but when John was a young boy, he came to Boston and was basically adopted by his uncle, also named John Rowe.
This older John Rowe, the adoptive father of the John Rowe in Jim's direct line, is quite a character.
I would say he was most famous for owning the ship Eleanor, one of the three ships that had their load of tea dumped in the Boston Harbor -- the famous Boston Tea Party.
Also, Rowe's Wharf is a well-known landmark in Boston Harbor.
Later John bought the Belcher estate in Milton, MA which passed by will to first his widow and then to the children of his brother Jacob. The younger John, Jim's ancestor, actually pre-deceased the older John and Jacob's other son Joseph never married, so the heirs in essence became the younger John's children, including Hannah.
Moses Webster lived in Haverhill, MA in 1828 when he married Hannah Rowe from Milton. Those two towns are quite a distance apart so it would be interesting to figure out how they met. There's probably an interesting story to Moses too, I haven't found it yet.
John Rowe, Jim's direct ancestor went to Harvard, I think at least for his law degree. So the Harvard tradition continued with Joseph Rowe Webster who went there and to Harvard Medical School and to Hollis Webster who also attended Harvard.
Census History notes for Hannah Rowe
1850. Joseph Rowe, an attorney age 70 lives in Milton, MA with Mary Rowe 76 and Hannah Webster age 50. I would guess that Hannah R Webster is in fact Hannah (Rowe) Webster and that possibly Joseph and Mary are her parents. But I am speculating a lot about this, there’s no concrete proof. Joseph was born in Canada. I am probably more confident that Joseph is her father than that Mary is her mother. Mary, for example, could be Joseph’s sister, considering the age difference.
