Research notes for Joseph Frederick
From LOA books in the Recorders Offce:
13 Sep 1834 - Pegy Frederick, widow & relict of Joseph Frederick, who died intestate, releases her rights to administer the estate.
From Orphan Court Docket in the Prothonotary Office:
15 Sep 1835 - Isaac Luke, Administrator of Joseph Frederick late of Penns Twp, setting forth that Joseph Frederick died intestate in the month of Sept 1834. He owned a little personal property & a lot of ground in Penns Twp adjoining Samuel Boyer, Geo Luke & others amounting to 10 acres. Small log cabin & stable is erected on the 10 acres, along with an orchard of fruit trees. He needs to sell the real estate to pay the debts of the estate.
31 Oct 1835 - real estate sold to Frederick Kinney
15 Dec 1835 - somebody realized there was a blacksmith shop of the property that wasn't included in the valuation & the property was sold for less than it's real value. Daniel Aurand, one of the heirs, will give twenty dollars more.
I thought sure I'd find a guardian appointment for Jacob in the OC docket, he was only 6 when his father died. But I guess they only appoint a guardian if there's money to be looked after, and it sounds like there wasn't any money left after paying all the bills.
So now the question is "Who is Daniel Aurand, and why is he an heir?"
AWT shows that Daniel Aurand was married to Rebecca Frederick, source being a book on the Aurand family. If Rebecca Frederick & Joseph Frederick were siblings, then Daniel Aurand is a brother-in-law of the deceased.
Both Daniel & Rebecca Aurand die in Elkhark Co. IN. AWT gives her date of birth as 2 July 1815 in Montgomery Co PA. Maybe the Frederick - Hilbish/Hollowbush link goes back further than we think.
I even read the 28 page estate for Daniel P. Hilbish. Jacob Frederick is mentioned several times in the list of debts owed. He was paid $17.82 + $11.22, along with some firm named "Hilbish & Mertz"... they got $21.77. There are a lot of names in this estate that you would recognized... George P. Mertz for one. I have it in a PDF if you want to read it.
I think we're back to Jacob Frederick being an adopted son of Daniel P. Hilbish.
