Parent-Proof notes for Katherine Green
When Lewis Petee Jr. and wife Katherine sold their one-third part of three tracts near Bush River in 1726, it was stated that she was the daughter of Matthew Green and granddaughter of Jane Boone. Regarding Jane, I don’t know if Boone was her maiden name or married name? Was she Matthew’s mother or Matthew’s wife’s mother? I do not think Katherine was our ancestor so it really doesn’t matter.
Parent-Proof notes for Lewis (Spouse 1)
We know from the will of Peter Potee that he had a son named Lewis.
My Comments notes for Lewis (Spouse 1)
Starting in 1726, a man named Lewis Potee Jr. began to acquire land in the Bush River area of then Baltimore County. I believe this man has a place in our direct line of ancestors and so the natural assumption would be that his father was Lewis Potee Sr.

We know there was a man named Lewis old enough to be his father and that would be Lewis, son of Francis Poteet. However, there is no document which indicates that the older Lewis had a son named Lewis while there is evidence that Lewis’ brother Peter had a son named Lewis. The custom back then was that the term Jr. was sometimes used to indicate “the younger” as opposed “the son of”, so my theory -- and it is just that -- is that Lewis Jr. was the son of Peter and referred to as Jr. to differentiate him from his uncle of that name.

The big question is how many men were there in Harford County in the 1700’s named Lewis Puttee (or any alternate spelling)? I know of three -- there may have been more. The three I know of were:

• The original Lewis, son of Francis. I don’t know when he was born but his brothers were born in the 1670’s, I believe -- so this Lewis was born, I would assume, well before 1700.

• Our ancestor, Lewis, who died in the 1770’s and left a will naming eight daughters and one son. I don’t know when our ancestor Lewis was born but his sister was born in 1705 and his parents I believe married in about 1690. I would guess Lewis was born in the late 1690’s or so.

• Lewis, known son of James, whose 1722 birth was recorded in church records and who I believe died in about 1760 I believe leaving no issue.

A Lewis Poteet married Catherine Greer in 1722 and a Lewis Poteet married Sarah Meadows in 1754. I know that our ancestor Lewis left a widow named Sarah when he died but I also am quite certain he had daughters too old to have been Sarah’s -- and so I have concluded that both these marriage records pertain to our ancestor Lewis. The 1722 marriage especially seems too late to have been the older “original” Lewis and was definitely too early to have been the younger one born in 1722. The only caveat is was there yet another Lewis unaccounted for?
Children Names notes for Lewis (Spouse 1)
The will of Lewis Puttee of Baltimore County was written 1 Apr 1772 and proved 7 Aug 1779. It mentioned wife Sarah and eight daughters Rebeckah Pollard, Ann Puttee, Mary Cavener, Catharine Whitaker, Elizabeth James, Martha Norris, Frances Puttee and the children of daughter Sarah Weir.

It mentioned only one son -- “Peter to receive 100 acre dwelling plantation part of Birr and after his mother’s death, remaining 100 acres also 125 acres Bonds Last Shift.” (Owning land called Bond’s Last Shift may be where the idea that his mother was Rebecca Bond comes from, but a lot of tracts of land in early Maryland had Bond as part of their name.) An interesting side note is that if Peter did not reach the age of 22 or did not have issue, then the land to go to Isaac and Francis, sons of Lewis’ daughter Frances Puttee -- she must have married some cousin. (Did daughter Ann also marry a cousin or was she single when Lewis wrote his will?) It is interesting to note that Lewis, like his father Peter, had many daughters but just one son.

Since he named wife Sarah in his 1772 will, it is only logical she was Sarah Meadows, her marriage to Lewis Potee in 1754 documented. I believe she was the mother of son Peter and perhaps one or several of the daughters -- but she could not have been the mother of all his daughters because three had already married by 1769. They were:

1. Cathrine married James Whitaker on 25 Aug 1763,

2. Mary married Patrick Cavindire (Cavener?) on 5 Jan 1769,

3. Sarah married Thomas Weir on 7 Dec 1756.

Note how the names match up to Lewis’ will. So clearly Lewis had an earlier wife and I think it was the aforementioned Catherine Greer (aka Katherine Green) who he married in 1722. I admit that seems a bit early given the dates of the marriages of Lewis’ daughters but everything else I know about Lewis makes it a reasonable conclusion.
