My Comments notes for Mary Haines
Her family were Quakers and Daniel became one upon his marriage.
My Comments notes for Daniel (Spouse 1)
Normally, I would not so much be interested in Daniel, but it seems to be his line that has most actively pursued their genealogy as the Colletts were early settlers of places like Clinton County, OH and other “midwestern” places.

One of his descendants was the husband of Mandy Grantham Goodman who I have corresponded with and she has pointed me to some sources I wasn’t aware of.

Daniel married Mary Haines. It was their son Daniel who compiled the scrapbook that I believe gives us a lot of facts about this family. More facts come from a document prepared in 2006 nominating Cool Springs Farm to the National Register of Historic Places. This farm was owned originally by Mary Haines’ father, but the document tells us a lot about the Collett family too.

It says Moses came with his family to the Bullskin Run area of what is now Jefferson County, West Virginia and apparently leased their farm from none other than George Washington, who owned a substantial amount of land in the Bullskin Run area. This document cites a letter from Washington to Moses’ son Isaac after Moses’ death and I have found that letter among the papers of George Washington.

“Mount Vernon, February 25, 1784.

Mr. Collett: It would have been quite proper to have written about the payment of your Rents, as a transfer of the Lease. When the Averages of the former are discharged, it is very probable I shall have no objection to the latter, provided it is to a purchaser who means to reside on, and will improve the Land. Until these happen I consent to no sale at all, and advise you to attend to the first. Your humble Servant. George Washington.”

The situation is that Moses had died and Isaac (and Moses’ other sons) are preparing to move further west and they wish to sell their lease-hold. But obviously Washington is more concerned about collecting what seems like past due rent before discussing transfer of the lease-hold. Quite interesting, really.
