Parent-Proof notes for Sutton Potee
Sutton Potee married in Baltimore in 1811 and was named in a Baltimore Directory in 1816 which is interesting because the Methodist church recorded that he moved away in 1813. We know from his tombstone he was born in 1788.
Everything fits perfectly that he must have been the son of Peter Potee, the earliest Potee in Baltimore (city), who was born in 1755 and whose family was associated with various Methodist churches in the city. There is no smoking gun -- such as a will or land record for Peter naming any of his children (only a grandson was named) -- but I simply have no doubt that Sutton was Peter’s son.
Many Internet Family Trees state the name of Sutton’s mother as Elizabeth Ann Sutton. We know that Peter’s wife was Elizabeth Ann -- so Sutton is a good guess, but I don’t consider that proven. Many Internet Family Trees also say his name was Sutton Milton Potee (or Milton Sutton), again a fact I haven’t seen confirmed by real documented evidence. It is curious to me that so much is made of his first name and not of his middle name, which also has no obvious source. Why couldn’t Elizabeth have been the daughter of Sutton Milton?
Relocated notes for Sutton Potee
A book on the history of Madison County says that Sutton Potee, a native of Baltimore, MD, emigrated, with his wife and three children, in the fall of 1817, to Ohio and settled on Deer Creek, Somerford Township. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which he united when a young man.
He was indeed listed in the 1820 Census in Deer Creek.
Children Names notes for Sutton Potee
I saw in some Ancestry Family Tree that Sutton supposedly had a daughter named Betsy Ann. I found that interesting.
Indeed, Betsy Ann Potee married Charles Atchison in Ohio in 1838. Her marriage record stated she was born in 1819. The 1850 Census shows this couple living right where Sutton lived in Somerford, Madison Co, OH and she was named Betsy A age 31 born Ohio.
So I believe we can conclude that indeed Sutton had a daughter who went by the name Betsy Ann.
This is all noteworthy because I think it means we can also conclude that Betsy Ann was named for Sutton's mother -- aka Elizabeth Ann. Had it been Peter Sr. (1755) who married Betsy Ann Shanks in 1806, when Sutton was 17, I doubt he would have named a daughter after her. So....Elizabeth Ann, known first wife of Peter Sr. must also have gone by Betsy Ann and was the Betsy Ann he referred to in that deed with Isaac.
