My Comments notes for Isaac Collett
Isaac deserves a place among the list of the children of Moses and Elizabeth Collett of interest to me because he was the recipient of a letter from George Washington, albeit not an overly friendly one.
“Mount Vernon, February 25, 1784.
Mr. Collett: It would have been quite proper to have written about the payment of your Rents, as a transfer of the Lease. When the Averages of the former are discharged, it is very probable I shall have no objection to the latter, provided it is to a purchaser who means to reside on, and will improve the Land. Until these happen I consent to no sale at all, and advise you to attend to the first. Your humble Servant. George Washington.”
The situation is that Moses had died and Isaac (and Moses’ other sons) were preparing to move further west and they wished to sell their lease-hold. But obviously Washington is more concerned about collecting what seems like past due rent before discussing transfer of the lease-hold. Quite interesting, really.
