My Comments notes for John Penrose Hettrick
Jennifer LePage, a descendant of John Penrose, found my website and brought to my attention the very interesting life story of John Penrose. She sent me a copy of an old newspaper article from the Chowan (NC) Herald part of a series titled “Lest We Forget” by Jasper L Wiggins. This particular article was titled The Hettrick Brothers and the Dutch Net and it was written 2 Sep 1954.
The article concerns John P Hettrick and William H Hettrick, brothers, sons of Jacob and Elizabeth (Hummel) Hettrick. As young men they were fishermen on Lake Erie and there they used something called a Dutch Net. John P came to the Albermarle as a Federal Soldier during the Civil War and he realized tat his way of fishing, not then being done here, would really prove productive if done here. So, in 1869, he came to Sandy Point and engaged first in fishing but later farming and operated a saw mill and even a bakery.
William Hettrick followed his brother to Albermarle and he too started first as a fisherman using the dutch net and then he to ventured into other businesses and also was quite successful.
