Research notes for Antonius Mertz
Die Familie Schafer (Mertz) says this about Antonius:

“Mertz, Antonius, born around 1595 approx., died after 1662. He hails, according to a winery receipt of the office of Lichtenberg, dated 1618, destroyed in the Darmstadt Castle archive during the bombing of 11/12 Sep 1944, from the area of Stra(ss)burg and was the municipal head (mayor) for Lord Hans Konrad von Wallbrun(n?) in Ernsthofen, 1618 - 1635, 1640, 1662. At the time, the Wallbrun(n?) territory included the towns of Asbach, Ernsthofen, Herchenrode, Hoxhohl, Klein (Lower / Small / Lesser) Biebrau, Neutsch, and Ober (Upper) Modau, or parts-thereof. Ernsthofen lost nearly its entire population after the Plague Year of 1635 and was completely deserted by the end of the war in 1650. Antonius Mertz (Mertz derived from Martinus) most likely lost his first wife in 1634/35. He entered into a second marriage on 8.Sept.1635, in the Chapel of the 1570 - 1581 built Landgraviate of Hesse (Hessian) Castle Lichtenberg, the refuge for the region due to the plague, with Rinck, Margereta Felicitas, born Seehiem 1782.”
