Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for John Mertz (H1c1)
There is a transcription of Berks County death records from the brief 1852-1855 period when such records were kept in most Pennsylvania counties. I found it in the Berks County Genweb Archives on-line.

The record for John Mertz (4 Oct 1813 - 24 Jan 1855) was there. It also gave his age at death as 41 years, 3 months, 11 days — which, if the date of death is correct, would compute to a birth date of 13 Oct 1813, so there is a slight discrepancy there. It said he was born in Maxatawny Township, was the son of Philip Henry Mertz and his wife Sarah, and that he was buried at Mertz Church.

His wife was Mary and he had surviving issue Catherine, Susanna and Sarah Ann.

John is designated H1c1.

John is on find-a-grave.
Known Daughters notes for John Mertz (H1c1)
Listed as living issue for John on his death record apparently were Catherine, Susanna and Mary Ann. However, after his death petitions for guardians were filed for just two daughters: Sarah Ann and Susanna Catherine. I believe there were but two daughters.

John and Maria baptized daughter Susanna in 1846. There is a death certificate for Susan C Arff (1846-1930) that says she was the daughter of John and Mary (Bieber) Mertz.

And, there is a death certificate for Sallie Ann Deisher (1850-1921), daughter of John and Mary (Bieber) Mertz. She would be aka Sarah Ann.
Known Sons notes for John Mertz (H1c1)
Despite no son being listed for John on his death record, there in fact was a son — born a month and a half after John’s death. That son was John Henry. A petition for a guardian for him was also filed and he can be found in the 1870 Census living with his (remarried) mother in 1870. Finally his death certificate confirms all of this.

H1c1a John Henry born 1855

John and Maria baptized a son William Philip in 1848, he apparently died in 1852. He is linked to his parent on find-a-grave, though his name is given there as William B.
Parent-Proof notes for Mary (Spouse 1)
We know the name of John’s wife from three death certificates of their three (surviving) children. From the 1870 Census, it is apparent she married second Benneville Boyer, and she is linked to him as his wife on find-a-grave.
