The county history book gives this biography: “Jacob Rogers Martz son of Daniel and Sarah (Powell) Martz, was born 21 Sep 1851 in Upper Paxton Township, and attended the schools of Millersburg. At the age of twelve years, with the consent of his parents, he went to live with Uriah Martz (no relation) on a farm in Upper Paxton were he attended school for two years. At the end of that time, he returned home, remaining until 1871. He then was a clerk in a general store. In the latter part of 1874 he went to Columbus, OH where he was a clerk in a general store, after which he went to Chicago, where for about three years, he was similarly employed. He then went to St. Louis.

Later he returned home, and in partnership with his father established himself as a butcher. conducting the business for a number of years. In 1889, he accepted a position as clerk in the Brownstone stores in Walltonville. Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Jacob Rogers (Spouse 1)
His death certificate says he was born in Upper Paxton and his parents were Daniel Martz and Sarah Seibert and both of them were born in Berks County.

Mary Hannah, as it says in the county history, was buried in Millersburg. There is a very nice monument there for her and it includes the names and dates of their two sons, both of whom died young. The monument has Jacob’s name and his birth date on it — but it is not where he was buried. Jacob died in 1928 (his tombstone says 1929) and he was buried in Hummelstown.
