Discrepancies notes for Margaret (Spouse 1)
I found this message board post from Aug 2000, “looking for information on the following Martz family of Dauphin County, PA. John H. Martz b: June 1840 in PA, married 1866 Margaret A. Clement b: January 1840 in PA. Children: Edwina E. Martz b: 1868 in PA, Emma K. Martz b: 1870 in PA, Mary Ann Martz b: April 3, 1871, in Dauphin County, d: aft 1920. Married Frank Dean Shaffer November 16, 1890, in Harrisburg, John H. Martz, Jr. b: 1873-1874 in Dauphin County, William A. Martz b: April 1876, Clement M. Martz b: 1878.”
The discrepancy is that the death certificates of Emma C Taggart born 1870, Mary A Sheaffer born 1871, John H Martz born 1872 and William A Martz born 1874 all say their parents were John or John H Martz and Margaret Walmer.
I am in fact fairly certain Margaret’s maiden name was Walmer as she can be found living with her parents John and Mary in the 1850 Census. (Mary was nee Mary Albert, known from death certificates of several of their children.) Moreover, when Margaret died, her son John H Martz was the informant on her death certificate and he wrote that her parents were John W Martz and Mary Albert — he obviously meant John Walmer and Mary Albert.
The curious thing is that John and Margaret Martz named a son Clement A and in John’s 1880 household, we find William Clement age 28 living with them, described as a brother-in-law. I have no clue how to explain his presence or their choice of Clement as a name for their son. I’m convinced that this census was the basis of someone assuming Margaret’s maiden name was Clement but it simply wasn’t.
In 1910, Margaret said she had had 4 children and 4 were still living and she was living with Katherine Taggart (aka Kate then Emma K in 1870 and 1880). This was not quite accurate. In 1900, her answer was she had been married 34 years and had 6 children, 4 still living. I think that is accurate. I think it also rules out any possible theory that maybe John had multiple wives as an explanation of the Clement name.
She was Margaret Walmer.
