Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Jairus C Mertz (H1b1d)
We know Jairus as William’s son since he lived with his father in the 1850 Census (erroneously identified as James) and 1860 (as Jerris). I would have not been able to track him except for the obituary of his brother James C, as cited on find-a-grave, which gives his name as Jairus and says he was living in Indiana. Indeed, I found him in 1880 living in Madison Township, Clinton County, IN — the very place where his grandfather Jacob and most of Jacob’s family had moved in the 1830’s.
Jairus is designated H1b1d. He is on find-a-grave, buried in the same cemetery as his grandfather and uncles and other relatives. What is especially interesting is that Jairus’ grandparents and his uncles and their descendants buried in that cemetery are spelled Martz but the Mertz spelling was retained for Jairus — and also his brother Alfred C who is also at Fairhaven — no doubt because they did not come to Clinton County until much later, a time when spelling had stabilized.
