We know James as the son of William because he ives wth his father in the 1850 and 1860 Census. He is designated H1b1e. He stayed in Berks County.
He is on find-a-grave and an obituary is posted there for him:
“Unbidden the relentless reaper entered homes in the vicinity of Kutztown the past week and cut down dear ones.
James C. Mertz, who last spring moved to Kutztown, could, we are sorry to say, not be with us long. He was a good and peaceable citizen and many regrets are expressed at his sudden and unexpected demise.
He died Monday evening at 7 o-clock at his home on Greenwich street, after suffering a short time with typhoid fever and heart trouble, aged 59 years, 5 months and 28 days. He had been ill less than a weak and bedfast but three days.
He was a son of William and Maria, nee Clouser, Mertz, and was born March 18, 1848. On June 18, 1874, he was married to Miss Malinda W. Adams, of Richmond, who survives with these children: John A., of Lancaster County; Esther Maria, wife of Alvin Smith, of Shoemakersville; Lillie Cora, wife of Milton Seidel, of Reading; Anna Bertha, wife of Tilghman Sittler, of Mill Creek Creamery, Maxatawny; James Austin, of Lancaster County. These brothers remain: Reuben, of Fleetwood; William C., of Reading; Peter, of Bowers, and Jairus, of Indiana.”
