Parent-Proof notes for Mary Jane Alley
Her maiden name is given on the Montana marriage records of two of their sons. I believe she was the Mary J Alley age 18 living in Union County, Iowa in 1860 with (her presumed parents) John 54 and Elisabeth 36.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Benjamin F (Spouse 1)
We know Benjamin as William’s son from his presence in his father’s household in 1850. He is designated H1d1a.
I had sort of given up on finding him but then I found his brother Amos in Union County, Iowa in 1880 and so I wondered who else named Martz lived in that place. The answer was B F Martz, age 41, born PA. Could it be Benjamin?
It absolutely was Benjamin. A check of later Census — he moved to Montana — confirms his name as Benjamin. He died in Spokane, Washington and his death certificate gives the name of his parents as John (??) Martz and Lena Panabaker. He is on find-a-grave, buried in Missoula.
He was also in Iowa for the 1870 Census but I cannot find him in 1860.
Discrepancies notes for Benjamin F (Spouse 1)
His Washington State death certificate says he died 1 Jun 1926 at age 86 years, 5 months and 3 days — which computes to 29 Dec 1839. His tombstone gives that same date of birth and says he died 2 Jun 1926.
