Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for William Martz (H2b3)
Ida Rees lists William as Henry’s third son. It turns out that is right but she has the wrong birth and death dates for him. She says he was born in 1823 so I wasn’t even sure it was him living with his father in 1850, since his age was given as 20. But it turns out, when he registered for the Civil War Draft, he indicated a birth of about 1820). He is designated H2b3. Kimberly Martz-Platt sent me the estate file for Henry Martz which shows that two of his sons predeceased him leaving children who were named and given a guardian. The sons who had died were not named, just their children.

One of the sons was John who I had known about for a long time but wasn’t convinced was Henry’s son but the names of his children were exactly right for what I knew about John. John had married Elizabeth Norris. The two other children, of the other deceased son, were named James and John. But it all came together when I found that living next door to Elizabeth Norris’ father in 1860 was William Martz with wife Sophia (Elizabeth’s sister) and one-year-old son James.
