Parent-Proof notes for Mary Ann Cook
Daughter of Peter Beatus Cook per her find-a-grave memorial.
Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for John B (Spouse 1)
John B Martz is on find-a-grave buried in Oakland County, Michigan. His find-a-grave memorial says he was born in 1809 in Chillisquaque Township, Northumberland County PA. Since I never heard of this man before stumbling on his memorial, that got my attention.

There is little doubt in my mind that John B is a descendant of Peter Mertz (P1). Peter’s name became Martz when he moved with his other brothers to Northumberland County where he alone settled in Chillisquaque. In the 1800 Census, Peter and his son Jonathan were the two Martzes of that place, in 1810, Peter and his son Daniel were the two there and by 1820, none of that family was left in that place (some were in nearby townships).

To zero in on the best candidate to be John B’s father, I looked at tick marks in the 1810 Census for Peter and his sons, who had a son 0-9?

Peter himself had no son age 0-9, but Daniel did. Those were the two actually still in Chillisquaque. Jonathan, then living in Augusta Township, had one son of that age but that, I’m pretty sure, was Simon. Peter had several other sons but none of them were yet married and living on their own in 1810.

A similar exercise, now looking for a son 10-15 in the 1820 Census, points to the same conclusion.

So I believe Daniel was the father of John B who is designated P1b1.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for John B (Spouse 1)
His obituary says he came to Michigan in 1832. Since Daniel disappeared from Census after 1820, I was hoping to find some evidence that he too may have gone to Michigan but no such evidence has presented itself, yet.

But John is in Michigan in Census starting in 1840 and continuing through 1880.
