Parent-Proof notes for Samuel (Spouse 1)
His death certificate says he was the son of John Jarrett and wife unknown.
His find-a-grave memorial says he was the son of Henry & Susannah (Musselman) Jarrett.
But I think the 1870 and 1880 Census tell the story.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Samuel (Spouse 1)
In 1850, he lived with Adam Braus 46, Mary 50, Jacob 35, Sarah 28 in Penns, Union, PA.
Lydia and John Jarrett were in the same place with children older and younger than John, why was he farmed out?
In 1860, in the household of John Jarrett Jr. of Monroe Township, Snyder County and wife Lydia, we find Henry age 20 and Samuel 17. It is not clear who Henry was, perhaps a nephew of John’s, but Samuel must be the same as the one who lived with Braus in 1850. But if all we had was the 1860 Census, it would be hard to argue for sure Samuel was son of John.
But the 1870 Census gives us more insight. Two households — one that of John Jarrett age 53, the other of Samuel Jarrett age 26 — share the same household number in Census. They were assigned two different “family” numbers but the same household. Living with Samuel were wife Catharine and their children including Nora A age 1. Immediately next door to them was the household of Samuel Musselman and wife Sarah age 25 said on find-a-grave to be aka Hetty from the 1850 Census, daughter of John Jarrett, sister of Samuel.
In 1880, we find about the same situation. John Jarrett age 66 lives with his housekeeper in Penn Township and his immediate neighbor is the household of Samuel Jarrett.
