PAUL GEORGE was born March 7, 1834, in Washington Twp., Cambria Co., Pa., a son of Philip and Rebecca (Pitman) George, dec. His wife, whom he married in Summit, Pa., March 4, 1860, is Surenda, daughter of George and Rachel (Keiler) Martz, dec. She was born in Union Co., Pa., Sept. 23, 1843. To this marriage were given the following children: Clara L., Mary A., Henry A., Ulysses G., William W., Rachel R., Walter B., Emma S., Zachariah, Nathan M., Gilbert H., Effie M., James J., Elizabeth and Edna P. Comrade George responded to the call of his country and served as a private in Co. A., 55 Pa. V. I., 1st Brig., 2d Div., 16, 18, and 24 A. C. He had been employed as a watchman when he was enrolled Feb. 8, 1864. He was obliged to seek hospital rest and care at Hampton, Va., three weeks in 1864, on account of disability, August, 1864, he was granted a furlough of 30 days. He was detailed in 1865 at Jones Landing to unload boats for three months. He fought at Drewry's Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Chapins Farm and Cold Harbor. He was honorably discharged from hospital May 28, 1865. His brothers, Albert, Morris, Frederick, Christopher and Philip were in the service. His wife's brothers, Henry, Rufus and Alfred, also served.
