NameAbraham Eckert
My Comments notes for Abraham Eckert
I have always wondered the connection of all the different Eckerts who were associated with the Ulps. An article dated 1 Sep 1911 in the Public Press seems to provide the answer, though there clearly was at least one important error in it.
The article reports on the recent Eckert-Ulp reunion and an address given there by H T Eckert on the family history. The article noted that in addition to the Ulps and experts, it was attended by the Morgan;s, McGregors, Hopewell, Blues and Lloyds. According to H L Eckert, Abraham Eckert whose wife was Peggy Stauffer , came to Northumberland from Berks, Lancaster and Lehigh county previously about the time the Ulps arrived. His children were: Jacob, John, Levi, George, Crawford, Mary Ann and Harriett. And the Ulps were: Mary, Elizabeth, Elsie, Sarah, Peggy, John and William.
And then he adds that the brothers Jacob, George, Levi and Crawford Eckert married the sisters Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Elise and also that John Ulp married Harriett Eckert.
He does not say which Eckert brother married which Ulp sister. You would think they were in order, but they definitely were not. I am sure that:
Jacob Eckert married Mary Ulp.
George Eckert married Elsie Ulp.
Levi Eckert married Sarah Ulp.
That leaves Crawford and Elizabeth as the last pair standing, but I can’t see any evidence of a Crawford Eckert-Elzabeth Ulp marriage.
The only Crawford I know of had two wives but neither was Elizabeth, or an Ulp for that matter. The Crawford I know was born in 1829, making him a good bit younger than his brothers. Could there have been an older Crawford and this younger Crawford perhaps a grandson of Abraham? Yes, it is possible but there’s no evidence of two Crawfords. And note that H L Eckert said that Crawford was “the last to live” consistent with the fact that of his death in 1905.
Besides, the newspaper article mentions that Hopewells attended the reunion. Their only ticket would have come from Elizabeth Ulp’s marriage to James Hopewell.
Other comments:
I knew that John Ulp married Harriett and I didn’t know her maiden name, Eckert makes a lot of sense.
I don’t know of Peggy or William Ulp.
