Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for John H Mertz (H4b1a)
In the 1850 Census, there was a Jno Merz (transcribed as Mery by Ancestry) living in Allen Township, Northampton County, in the household of George Schade. On the very next page of that Census, we find the widow Sally Merz (transcribed Mery) and next to her Jno Merz (transcribed Mery), age 66.

I know the older Jno and I know Sally. He was John Mertz who I strongly believe was the son of Henry Mertz (H4), the progenitor of the Mertz family in Allen Township. And she was Sarah (Dewees) Mertz, widow of John Mertz (Jr. let’s call him) who died in 1846.

It is my belief that John (Jr.) and Sarah had a fairly large family including at least two daughters — who were living with their mother in 1850, and three sons who were scattered in other local households, including: Joseph age 11, Tilghman age 6 (living with his grandfather) and this younger John age 13. There may have been one or two others.

It is the proximity of where this younger John was living in 1850, the fact that he then lived his life in Allen Township, the fact that he is buried in the same cemetery as John (Jr.) and Sarah and the fact that it seems clear all of the sons of Sarah (Sally) seem to have been scattered in 1850 all of which lead me to believe this younger John was the son of the deceased John (Jr.).

He is designated H4b1a.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for John H Mertz (H4b1a)
John and his wife Amelia are buried at St John’s in Howertown where his parents are also buried. They are on find-a-grave.
Parent-Proof notes for Amelia P (Spouse 1)
Her maiden name comes from the PA Death Certificate of their son Samuel. She is linked to her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Hope, on find-a-grave. And all this is confirmed by an Easton baptism with a matching birth date for Amelia.
