From his presence in the 1850 Census, age 5, living with the Mullen family in Montgomery County, IN, a guess was that he might be a son of John and Rebecca (Bowman) Martz who died there in 1849. But if he was, why wasn’t he living with the rest of his siblings all living together with oldest brother William?
I don’t know the answer to that question but I do know that he indeed was the son of John and Rebecca because when he married second late in life, on 11 Nov 1922 to Emma D Stewart, his marriage registration form said he was born in Montgomery County the son of John and Rebecca (Bowman) Martz. That form gave his birth date as 17 Feb 1854 — but I think 1854 was mis-transcribed (or maybe mis-forgotten) and it really was 17 Feb 1845.
John is designated P5b1d.
