Charles R. “Dick” Mertz, 76, of Selinsgrove, passed away after a courageous battle against cancer on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, surrounded by his family.
Dick was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Sunbury, a son of the late Charles Oakley and Bessie Anna (Morgan) Mertz. On Aug. 16, 1958, he married the former Arla Engle and they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this year.
Dick graduated from Northumberland High School in 1957. He was the short stop on the baseball team, point guard on the basketball team, and quarterback on the football team. Dick’s senior year he quarterbacked the team that beat Sunbury for the first time in 63 years. He attended the University of Buffalo and Penn State University where he graduated in 1961 with a degree in cost accounting.
Dick was first employed by Archer Daniel Midland in Minneapolis, Minn., before returning home to join the family at Sunbury Motor Company. Dick and his cousin Bob owned SMC where they managed it to be one of the most respected dealerships in the area.
He was a 40-year member of the Susquhanna Valley Country Club.
Dick was an avid fisherman and golfer. He enjoyed Penn State football games, snowmobiling, the family cabin in Canada, and his home in Jupiter, Fla.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jamie Mertz Kieffer (John), of Smithsburg, Md., and Lisa Mertz Tucker, of Boca Raton, Fla.; one son, Thomas Richard Mertz (Elizabeth), of Selinsgrove; his greatest joy are his six grandchildren, Zachary Kieffer, Garrett Kieffer, Mollie Kieffer Conway (Josh), Olivia Tucker, Thomas Tucker V, and Kyle Mertz; two sisters, Ann Bird and Rachel Mull (Robert); and nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandparents, J. Oakley and Radie Mertz; maternal grandparents, Charles and Ursula Morgan; son-in-law, Thomas G. Tucker IV; cousin, Robert W. Mertz Jr.; brothers-in-law, Maynard O. Engle, Ulysses “Bud” Engle, Dale C. Engle, and John Bird; and sister-in-law, Marcella Engle.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Christ Community United Methodist Church, Park and Fisher Roads, Selinsgrove, followed by a celebration of life.
