My Comments notes for Charles Oakley (Spouse 1)
Here is a summary of his obituary. Charles O "Sox" Mertz of North'd RR2 died 11 Nov 1992 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born 6 May 1915, he was the son of John O and Radie (Diehl) Mertz. Was married to Bessie A Morgan for more than 55 years. He shared ownership of Sunbury Motor Co., was a partner in Tri-County Equipment and owned and operated dairy farms in Mifflinburg. Survived by same children mentioned in his wife's obituary,
My favorite story involving Uncle Sox derives from the fact that we both were C Oakley Mertz, he being Charles, of course. As I was finishing college which happened to be about the time kids were moving to Canada to evade the draft during the Vietnam War, my mother called me (a rare event) to say I had received a letter from Canada. It quickly became clear she thought it must mean I was planning to join this flow of “draft dodgers”. I told her to open it, which really surprised her (she clearly assumed it had gone to Sunbury rather than me directly by some mistake). She did then open it and then, in a little embarrassed voice, my mother told me it was the electric bill for a cabin Sox had just very recently bought in Canada. The letter had been addressed C O Mertz, Sunbury, PA. Intended for Sox, it was delivered to our house.
