OBIT: John W. Bird Jr., 70, of Susquehanna Trail, and Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Friday evening Sept. 17, 2010 in Nottingham Village.
He was born June 30, 1940 in Sunbury, a son of the late John W. and Mildred (Shay) Bird. John was married for 52 years to Dorothy Ann Mertz, of Northumberland.
He was a 1958 graduate of Northumberland High School and was proud to be part of the football team, along with his brother-in-law Richard Mertz, that defeated Sunbury in October 1956.
John had been employed by Sherwin Williams, Lewisburg; Montgomery Ward, Sunbury and he and his wife owned and operated the Millheim IGA for 25 years.
Mr. Bird was a member and past master of the Free and Accepted Masons Charity Lodge #144, Lewisburg and the State College Elks Lodge. He also had been a member of both the Northumberland #1 Fire Co. and the Northumberland Hook and Ladder.
He enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and golfing. He often vacationed in Florida and had wintered in Punta Gorda for the last eleven years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, John C. Bird, of Sandy, Utah, Steve W. and Denise Bird, of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Katie, Matthew, Anthony, Brian and Michelle Bird; one sister and brother-in-law, Sandra L. and Leonard Reichenbach, of Golfstown, N.H.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard and Arla Mertz, of Selinsgrove, Rachel and Bob Mull, of Northumberland; and seven nieces and nephews.
