Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Philip Mertz (P4a1)
He was named in his father’s will who left him his share of the farm where Peter P was already living in Mifflin County. He is designated P4a1.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Philip Mertz (P4a1)
THE LEWISTOWN MERTZES. Philip P Mertz moved to Mifflin County prior to the 1840 Census. Jack Mertz called him the “founder of the Lewistown branch of the Mertz family”.

1830. Philip Mertz is listed just below his father in Washington Township, Union County.

After that he was listed in Mifflin County. In 1850 Philip Martz, age 43, lived in Derry Township with Lydia 37, Susanna 14, Daniel 12, Emma J 11, Peter 10, Edward 8, Mary 6, George 4, Philip 2 and new-born Sarah.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Philip Mertz (P4a1)
Philip is on find-a-grave. No tombstone photo is there. I’ve always wondered whether he too, like other “founders” of the family in a new place, has a large monolith there in his honor.
Find-a-Grave notes for Philip Mertz (P4a1)
Known Daughters notes for Philip Mertz (P4a1)
I know the names of his daughters from Census and from History of Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata and Perry Counties. As is typical of such county histories, their deep ancestry is bogus. It says that Peter (1774) descends from William of Lehigh County who emigrated in 1776 -- where do they get this stuff? But the more contemporary information I assume is more accurate. What I know is covered in my database.
Known Sons notes for Philip Mertz (P4a1)
I know the names of his sons in the same way and they too are covered in my database. They were Daniel, Peter H, Edward, George and Philip D. Edward died in the Civil War, unmarried I believe. He is not covered further and not specifically given a designation. The others, except for Philip D moved to White County, Indiana.
