Bernard Klein is known first because he is mentioned as the son of Lorentz and Catherine (nee Mertz) deceased daughter of Nicholas in Orphan's Court petitions just after Nicholas' death.

1810 and 1820. He’s in Penns Twp.

1830. He is 70-80, lives in Union Twp with his wife 50-60 (?). A neighbor is Barnhart Kline Jr.

I found a message on the Northampton County Message Board posted by Paul and Dora Clary in 1997. “We are researching Barnhart Kline b. 16 Dec 1756 Northampton Co., PA with wife Margaret and parents Lorentz and Elizabeth (Mertz) Kline. Barnhart Kline d. 3 Aug 1837 Union Co., PA now Snyder Co., PA.”

His name sounded familiar to me since there was the petition regarding the heir of Nicholas Mertz of that name, but his mother was Catherine.

Then I found a write-up on him by Mary Belle Lontz who called him a prominent citizen of Union County in one of her many books. She listed four children for him including Margaret 1792-1871 who married Squire Jacob F Hummel. Since any intermarriage of Hummels and Mertz descendants piques my interest, I did a little more work and found the AWT of Jeff Fowler.

Jeff solves the mystery of Lorentz’ wife by saying her name was Catherine Elizabeth. He lists ten children including all the ones listed by Lontz. All the information about their children that I show comes from Jeff except I know a little more about Margaret.

It is interesting that this family came to Union County.
