Notes for Stewart P MacLennan
Andrew Robertson is Bob MacLennan's second cousin. He has given us the names of quite a few of Stewart's ancestors and unless noted otherwise, he is the source for all of the names in Stewart's pedigree. Andrew has not concerned himself with birth dates or death dates and so, for the most part, any dates I have come from a source other than Andrew. He says these people came, for the most part, from Ross-Cromarty County, Scotland, specifially from Lochalsh, Plockton and Applecross.

Stewart's birth date, marriage date and death date are all given in the Goodner book by Hubert Lacey.

One other source of information I have about Stewart comes from the California Death Index, a summary I take it of death certificates. It says he died 26 Jul 1954 in Los Angeles. He was born 10 Oct 1884 in Canada. The database says that his mother“s maiden name was MacLennan. That struck me when I first saw it as a typo -- perhaps a misunderstanding of that question by whoever answered it. However, it turned out to be an interesting tidbit of information, as confirmed by Andrew Roberston.

Canadian Census. Stewart is listed in the 1891 Canadian Census as a 6-year old living with his parents. And he is listed in the 1901 Census as a 16-year old living with his parents. The Census says he was born 10 Oct 1884 -- in agreement with information I obtained elsewhere. It lists an occupation of machinist for him. He is not listed in the 1911 Census which is consistent with the belief that he had departed for America.

Census Listings 1910-1930. Stewart apparently came to the United States in about 1909. I have not found him in the 1910 Census, but I doubt he has yet settled and so I suspect he is not to be found. He married in 1911 in Long Beach but I do not know when exactly he came to California and/or whether he came directly from Canada to California. By 1920 he has married and is living in Los Angeles where he is a Presbyterian Minister.

1920. Stewart P MacLennan, age 35, is living in San Pedro Township, Los Angeles where he is a minister. He lives with wife Ollie, age 32, and they have three sons: Gordon S 7, Duncan K 5 and Edward G about 3 Á (the Census was taken 13 Jan 1920). Stewart was born in Canada as were his parents. Ollie was born in TX, her father AL and her mother TX. Gordon and Duncan were both born in CA while, interestingly, Edward was born in Ohio. (Stewart apparently studied for the ministry in Xenia, Ohio.)

1930. Stewart P MacLennan, age 45, is living in Assembly District 55 in Los Angeles where he is a Presbyterian Minister. He lives with wife Ollie G, age 44, and they have four sons and a daughter: Gordon S 17, Duncan K 15, Edward G 13, Kenneth W 8 and Margaret A 4. The birthplaces are consistent with what was stated in 1920, Ohio for Edward and California for all his siblings.
