In the 1940 Census, he was a maintenance man at the municipal water and power company.
Parent-Proof notes for Lucy Mae (Spouse 1)
When I first worked on Bob MacLennan’s ancestry in about 2005, Mary was certain Bob’s mother was a Hunter (thus the name Katharine Hunter MacLennan) but had to dig deep in her memory to come up with the first name Lucy. And Mary knew Bob’s paternal grandfather was Stewart MacLennan so figured that his maternal grandfather must have been Robert Hunter (thus the name Robert Stewart MacLennan).
But since I first worked on that ancestry, more databases of pubic records have become searchable on-line and it is now pretty easy to document the name of Bob’s mother if all I knew was the name of his father.
In the 1940 Census (which became available in about 2010), we find the household of Edward G MacLennan age 24 and wife Lucy M MacLennan also 24 and their 10 month old daughter Peggy L living in Los Angeles, CA. And a database of California marriages shows the marriage of Edward Goodner MacLennan to Lucy Mae Hunter on 1 Sep 1938. This database also shows the names of Edward’s parents: Stewart P and Ollie J (Goodner) MacLennan. And it shows the names of Lucy’s parents: Robert Thomas and Prisicilla G (Elliott) Hunter. Now that’s a genealogical gold mine!
A database of British Columbia deaths had all that same information and of course added the date of death for Robert and Lucy which was 8 Jul 1965 and added the full middle name for Lucy’s mother, she was Priscilla Grace Elliott. It also had birth dates for Lucy (21 Jan 1916) and Edward (29 Mar 1916).
Now I should add that all of the above information can also be found now on find-a-grave where there is a photo of their tombstones and links for both Robert and Lucy to their respective parents, But all of that information is only there because I created those memorials for them and issued a photo request for someone to find and photograph their tombstones (fulfilled for me by a woman named Peggy Schulz) and I added links to their parents.
