Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for John Martz (P6a4)
Allen Tallman traces the descendants of David and Barbara (Miller) Martz. Their daughter Susanna married John Richstine. Two of John and Susannah's children married Martzes -- one specifically stated by Allen Tallman to be Catherine the daughter of (the other) David and Magdalena Shissler. Based on a birth date in close proximity to Catherine's, I have also placed John who married Elizabeth Richstine as a son of David and Magdalena, though Allen Tallman does not say who he was.
Meiser doesn’t specifically list this John as a son of David and Magdalena but he notes that Gearhart suggests that may be the case. So the truth is no one knows for sure who this John is, but I have gone with Gearhart’s theory.
If it is correct that Jacob and David who married the Miller sisters were brothers and that John was the brother of Catherine, then John married his second cousin on the Mertz line and Miller line (as did Catherine).
John is designated P6a3.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for John Martz (P6a4)
There was a John Martz who was born and raised in the Augusta or Shamokin Township area and followed his father-in-law, John Richstine, to Butler County, OH. John Richstine was there in 1840 but then moved to the Dayton area by 1850 and then by 1860, moved to Peoria.
John Marty (i.e. Martz) was in Butler County too in 1840, in Madison Township where John Richstine was. Another Martz line entirely was in Wayne Township. John, who had nothing to do with that other line, just happened to by 1850 John to have moved to Wayne Township.
So John Martz either went with or followed John Richstine to Butler County and then he lingered. Then he went to Peoria and, according to Tallman, John Richstine followed him there..
The 1860 Census listing for John is quite interesting and I think helps show that he is correctly placed as David and Magdalena’s son. John and Elizabeth Martz lived in Brimfield Township, Peoria County. A neighbor was her parents John and Susan Richstine. Living with John and Elizabeth were Charles 25, Nancy (?) M 20, Susan C 21, Mary E 17 and Hannah 15. I assume these were John’s children. But also present in this household was Ransom Richstine 6, Jacob Martz 40, William J Martz 26 and George A Shissler 22.
Obviously the name George Shissler would be easily explained if John indeed was the son of Magdalena (Shissler) Martz. And I’m quite certain that Jacob age 40 and William J age 26 are both the sons of William Martz, the mystery man, but I believe also may have been the son of David and Magdalena. So I believe that John was their uncle. William, father of Jacob and William J, would be soon to follow to Peoria. Each aspect of this strengthens the conclusion that William and John were brothers.
