Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Charles Marts (P5e2)
Charles is named as a son of Peter by descendants of this family. His age and presence in Hamilton, County make this totally logical. He is designated P5e2.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Charles Marts (P5e2)
By tracking his son Andrew J, I was able to track Charles to Iowa.
Death and Find-a-Grave notes for Charles Marts (P5e2)
I cannot find Charles on find-a-grave. There is no Charles Marts with the right dates listed anywhere. As he was listed in the 1860 Census in Iowa and his family was there without him in 1870, I assume he died sometime in the 1860’s in Iowa.
Known Sons notes for Charles Marts (P5e2)
Descendants say Charles married first Elizabeth McGill and by her had Peter, Catherine, Lydia J, John, Christina and Andrew. He married second Lucinda Harty, widow of Elza Olvey, and by her had Samuel, Charles W, Albert and Silas.
Indiana marriage records seem to confirm this. The marriage of Charles and Elizabeth took place in Wayne County in 1832. Obviously it was this Charles.
Then there is a marriage record of Lucinda Olvey to Charles Marts in 1850 in Randolph County and Ancestry suggests she was actually Lucinda Harty who married first Elza Olvey in 1845. The fact that Lucinda lived with Charles in 1850 with his son Andrew J and two Olvey children seems to confirm this whole scenario.
The find-a-grave memorial of Samuel Marts, born 1851, says Samuel was the 7th child of his father and the 3rd of his mother, both of them having children from deceased spouses when they married. The memorial did not name either of Samuel’s parents but it too seems to confirm the whole scenario.
But there is a third Indiana marriage record that puzzles me. In 1846, Charles Marts married Sarah Brees in Hamilton County. I don’t know who this could be if not this same Charles so I believe Sarah was his second wife and Lucinda his third. In any event, there do not appear to have been any surviving children born to Sarah and Charles so her omission from the overall story is perhaps understandable.
I am able to track sons Peter and Andrew by wife Elizabeth McGill. I have not been able to learn anything more about son John by that marriage.
Since all of Charles’ sons by Lucinda were born after 1850, normally I would not track them further but Samuel born 1851 is close enough to my 1850 cutoff and of interest to me since I am in contact with a descendant of his, I have also tracked him.
Parent-Proof notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
A newspaper article from Richmond, IN dated 19 Jan 1855 named the heirs of Betsy (McGill) Martz who was the deceased daughter of Patience McGill as Peter, Andrew, Lydia Jane and Christiana Martz.
