The New Hampshire genealogy book tells us very little about the Hollis family other than names, some dates, names of wives and generally that they started out in Weymouth and later moved to Braintree.
It does say, by way of introduction to the family: “Hollis is an ancient English place name, long since assumed as a surname by persons who went from there to other places; and now common in America, both as a a place name, and as a surname. The Hollis family in America is notable for the excellent character of its members.”
About John it says only that he was a resident of Weymouth where he married Elizabeth Priest, daughter of James.
Neither John nor his wife Elizabeth are mentioned in the Vinton book. They are stated to be his parents on the memorial of their son, John Hollis, but no separate memorial for them is there.
