Birth, Parent-Proof, Designation notes for Henry Mertz (P3b1
It is just a guess that Henry was the son of Philip Martz (N3a1). I base it on the fact that Henry just appeared in 1850 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County. From all my work on the Mærtzes of nearby places, I don’t recognize him as some Henry who disappeared from some other place.
So, if he was a native of Schuylkill County, then, based only on his geographic location, maybe he was the son of Philip who had lived previously in that place and who, if I have correctly identified Philip in 1830, had a son of the right age to be Henry.
Henry is designated N3a1a.
Relocated and Census Tracking notes for Henry Mertz (P3b1
While I may not be certain who has father was, the Henry I’m profiling here is the Henry Martz in 1850 and 1860 in West Brunswick in Census and 1870 in Pine Grove. We know it’s him in Pine Grove from the correspondence of the names and ages of other household members from 1860 to 1870. I can find his son Frank in 1880 and his daughter Sarah in 1900 but other than that, the rest of the family seems to disappear after 1870.
Known Sons notes for Henry Mertz (P3b1
From Census, there was Frank age 8 in 1850, 17 in 1860 and 27 in 1870; William age 4 in 1850 and 13 in 1860 and Daniel (spelled Denice in 1860) age 9 in 1860 and 18 in 1870.
William. I found the baptism record for William at St Paul’s Evangelical Church in Orwigsburg — where Peter Mertz (designated J3b) also baptized a son, perhaps a hint something is amiss with my placement of one or the other of these two men) — William was born 11 Aug 1846. Knowing his birth date, I searched find-a-grave to see if I could find him and found a William Mertz (1 Aug 1846-15 Jul 1869) buried at St Peter’s Cemetery in Pine Grove. The apparent discrepancy between 11 Aug and 1 Aug doesn’t bother me a bit, maybe I misread the church record it was hard to read or maybe that was a baptism date — I’m sure it’s the same William. In fact, his tombstone says the son of William and Hannah. He died young, no need to designate him.
Daniel. One other person named Mertz was buried in that same cemetery: Daniel Mertz (1 Sep 1851-30 Mar 1880), obviously William’s brother. He too died young and there is no need to designate him.
Frank. He is the only son who survived to marry and have a family. He is designated N3a1a1.
Known Daughters notes for Henry Mertz (P3b1
Henry and Hannah baptized daughter Catherine Ann who was born 24 Oct 1844 at St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Orwigsburg. She no doubt the 6-year-old daughter Ketty in the 1850 Census.
From Census, we also learn of a daughter Louisa A (or Lucy) born about 1849. She may be the Lucy Borrell (1849-1936) whose Pennsylvania death certificate said (as to parents names) only that her father’s name was Matz but who was listed as Lucy A in the 1930 Census.
And daughter Sarah (1856-1935) is known from her presence in the 1860 and 1870 Census and her later death certificate.
